Once a factory complex, Kv. Sämjan has long been a hub for small-scale industry and cultural activity in Malmö’s Sofielund district. The proposal explores how architecture can open up and reconnect this historically layered block—while allowing its creative energy to remain.
By removing part of the interior structure, the design brings light and air into the heart of the block. A new performing arts venue is placed at its center, framed by a courtyard that cuts through the site and invites people in. The intervention strengthens the presence of the block in the urban fabric, reconnecting surrounding streets and activating public life.
New housing extensions are added, building on the robust frame of the old industrial structures. Rather than replacing the past, the project extends it—adding to the area’s rich mix of functions, forms, and people that defines Sofielund today.
